Present & Future Installed Capacity of Alumina Refinery in India

Hi Friends,

India has total reserves of over 3000 million tonnes of Bauxite majority of which are gibbsitic in nature. The quality of bauxite coupled with availability of infrastructure facilities in the proximity to mines gives ample opportunity for putting up new Alumina refineries in the country. The total installed capacity of Alumina refinery in India is about 5.280 million tonnes per year as presented in following tabular data-

All the above seven (7) Alumina refineries were fully operational till 2008 but Balco Korba and Malco Metturdam (both owned by Sterlite Industries) were made inoperative since 2nd half of 2009. The stoppages of these two refineries has reduced the operative capacity of Alumina plant in India to 5.00 Mtpa only.

Two new Alumina refineries each having production capacity of 1.40 to 1.5 Mtpa in the country are in advance stage of execution and other two of similar capacities are in engineering stage for execution. In addition, Alumina refineries are also planning the brown-field expansion of their plants for further addition in production capacity of alumina. Thus, total production  capacity of calcined alumina in India will be over 13.00 Mtpa by 2015.
